Exposition BAZART OFFICE - FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Avec le projet Bazart Office, Virginie Pierre allie deux de ses passions, le voyage et la création contemporaine. Son ambition : créer des connexions sans façons, proposer aux artistes et aux publics des cadres propices aux découvertes et à l'expression. Portée par le goût de l'aventure et un esprit d’entreprise indubitable, la créatrice liégeoise prise l'inattendu et fait confiance aux rencontres qui jalonnent sa route.

Voici quelques mois, dans le contexte stimulant de la biennale d'Istanbul, elle avait convié plusieurs plasticiennes de la communauté française à exposer sur les rives du Bosphore, en compagnie de consoeurs orientales. Par un juste retour des choses, elle présente aujourd'hui à Liège les réalisations d’hommes et de femmes d’ici et de là-bas. Une quinzaine d’intervenants aux parcours diversifiés prennent part à l’événement ; un tiers d’entre eux s’invitent pour la première fois en Cité ardente.

Le musée d'Ansembourg offre un écrin personnalisé à la manifestation. Témoin d'une époque où les savoirs et les pensées se propageaient au coeur de salons d'initiative privée, dans une ambiance volontiers épicurienne, le lieu fait écho à la démarche qui sous-tend Bazart Office – Foreign Affairs.

S'il a servi plusieurs expositions d'art actuel au cours des dix dernières années, cet espace chargé d'histoire reste difficile à occuper, en raison même de ses atouts : une décoration foisonnante au caractère rococo, qui nous ramène au XVIIIe siècle. Gageons que les artistes parviendront à sortir l'ancien hôtel de maître de sa torpeur afin de réactiver le tourbillon d'audace qui présida à sa construction. Chaque participant occupera un lieu particulier, de la salle des fêtes jusqu'aux chambres à coucher.

Aborder le thème des affaires étrangères, fil conducteur de l’exposition, tient nécessairement du défi : les différences identitaires, effectives ou fantasmées, soulèvent leur cortège de peurs et de préjugés. L’art constitue un vecteur puissant pour accueillir l’altérité et sortir de l’immobilisme.

BAZART OFFICE – FOREIGN AFFAIRS Exhibition

Virginie Pierre combines two of her passions with the Bazart Office project, travelling and contemporary creation. Her ambition : to create informal connections, proposing frameworks conducive to discovery and expression to artists and the public. Buoyed on by a taste for adventure and unquestionable entrepreneurship, this creative woman from Liège catches on to the unexpected and puts her trust in new people she meets along her way.

A few months ago, in the inspirational context of the Istanbul Biennial, she invited several visual artists from the French-speaking part of Belgium to exhibit on the shores of the Bosporus, along with some Eastern counterparts. Conversely, she is now presenting works by men and women from here and from there, in Liège. Fifteen participants with diverse backgrounds are taking part in the event – for a third of them it is their first invitation to the ‘ardent’ city.

The Ansembourg Museum offers a customized setting for the event. It bore witness to a time when knowledge and thoughts were spreading from the hearts of drawing rooms, due to private initiatives in pleasurably epicurean atmospheres. The building therefore echoes the approach that underlies Bazart Office – Foreign Affairs.

This space, steeped in history, is still difficult to use even if several exhibitions of contemporary art have been staged there over the last ten years. This is precisely due to its assets : abundant decorations in the Rococo style, which transport one back to the 18th century. You can bet that the artists will succeed in awakening the mansion from its slumber and reactivating the whirlwind of boldness that presided over its construction. Each artist will take up a particular place, from the entertaining room to the bedrooms.

Approaching the topic of foreign affairs, the underlying theme of the exhibition, is a challenge by necessity : identity differences, whether real or fantasized, raising their procession of fears and prejudices. Art is a powerful vehicle to cater for differences and to escape from opposition to change.
